(Qualified Teacher Status subject to students passing the government imposed National Skills Tests in Literacy, Maths and ICT.). The course carries 60 Credits towards a Masters Degree.

The 38-week course complies with the requirements of the National Curriculum for ITT and is largely school based, with 24 weeks in schools and 14 weeks in the course centre at Upton House, enabling you to successfully link theory and practice.

Tutors & classroom teachers, experienced in teacher training will run courses, seminars and workshops specially designed to introduce you to the needs of children and the primary curriculum. There will be ample opportunity for personal study time, peer group discussion and evaluation of your school-based work.

There is a strong emphasis on the use of information and communications technology throughout the course and extensive use is made of the rich local environment and facilities.

You will gain experience in at least two local primary schools during your training and will be supervised in each school by a trained mentor.

A Professional Co-ordinator, with expert knowledge and experience of teacher education will oversee and co-ordinate your training during the course under the direction of the SCITT Management Board-The Management Board is made up of representatives of the partnership, including head teachers, mentors and trainees.

The course is an 'all-through general primary course' and will train you to teach children from 5-11 years.

All trainees are now required to undertake training in both Key Stages and substantial school experience will be provided in both. You may, however, choose to specialise in either Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2, in which case you would need two teaching practices in your chosen Key Stage. Students undertake two Block Practices in Key stages 1 and 2 during the course - the final Block Practice will be in the Key Stage of your choice.

Before graduation you will also be given the opportunity to develop an individual professional strength and specialism linked to the subject of your first degree or a chosen 'A' level subject. Candidates will be asked to specify their specialist subject by the time of interview.

All teacher-training courses are subject to the trainee and selection requirements set out in DCSF Circular 07/07 'Professional Standards for Teachers' contains high expectations for the subject knowledge of trainees in English, Maths, Science and ICT. We strongly recommend that potential students familiarise themselves with ICT techniques in preparation for teacher training.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to Primary Education and to have spent time, or be willing to spend time, working voluntarily in a primary school to familiarise themselves with working with children and the demands of the primary classroom. A minimum of 1 week (preferably 2) is required.
